The Benefits of Bamboo in Tissue and Hygiene Products

Updated: Sep 2, 2021

Bamboo is an up-and-coming eco-friendly material with a plethora of environmental benefits, including the restoration of degraded land, poverty alleviation and helping to fight global warming. Highly versatile and extremely fast-growing, this superplant’s many attributes make it a perfect material for all kinds of new sustainable alternatives, such as its use in tissue and hygienic products.

1. Bamboo is safe to use

Bamboo fibres have a substance called “bamboo kun” that makes them naturally anti-bacterial. This prevents bacteria and microbes growing on bamboo products, making it the ideal resource for a large range of hygiene products. Its fibers are also anti-fungal, odour resistant and offer super absorbency. Unlike many other tissue and hygiene products, Bamboo requires no harsh or added chemicals, including chlorine, dyes or fragrances. As a purely natural product, it is, therefore, safe to use on even the most sensitive skin.

2. Bamboo is soft and strong

You might be surprised to find out that bamboo’s natural properties make it remarkably strong and soft to touch. It is therefore a very effective material for use in a range of tissue and hygiene products, such as toilet paper and wipes.

3. Bamboo is biodegradable

Bamboo is a natural resource that is 100% biodegradable and compostable, meaning that it will disintegrate naturally back into the earth, making for clean and safe soils.

4. Bamboo is sustainability grown

A form of grass, bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants in the world. It can grow back nearly as quickly as it’s cut down, making it one of the most sustainable natural products on the planet. It also does not require replanting after harvesting and is said to release over 30% more oxygen than trees. Hardwood, meanwhile, takes many years to mature, needs to be dug up before being replanted, and grows over 30 times slower than bamboo. Thus, while an estimated 27,000 trees are cut down daily for the world’s tissue needs alone, there is a large surplus of fast growing, sustainable bamboo that can be utilized. Incorporating this ‘green gold’ as even a proportion of our manufactured tissue and hygiene products could present a significant step in helping to support our planet’s future.

So when it comes to the various eco-friendly alternatives to be used in tissue and other hygiene products, bamboo presents an excellent option! Curious to find out more about this miracle plant? Check out our news, blogs and updates here.
